Nominations open
By-election for England, Wales and Northern Ireland constituency
Nominations are now open for Scottish solicitors hoping to join the Law Society of Scotland's decision-making body to represent our members practising in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
Becoming a member of the Law Society Council provides an opportunity to influence key decisions, contribute to the work of the Society and help to represent and support solicitors in your constituency.
As a Council member you have the opportunity to expand your network, broaden your understanding of issues affecting the legal profession and the clients they serve, and represent the views of members in your constituency area.
One seat is currently available for members practising in our England, Wales and Northern Ireland constituency until May 2027, when the next election for this seat will take place.
The nominations period opens on Monday, 19 January until 5pm on Monday, 16 February 2026.
There are 10 Council meetings a year and most meetings are hybrid, with the option to join via MS Teams or attend in person at the Law Society of Scotland, Atria One, 144 Morrison Street, Edinburgh, EH3 8EX.
You can see more about the role of our Council members here. You can also check our benefits page to find out what volunteering at the Law Society as a committee or Council member brings to your personal and professional development.
Submitting your nomination
Members nominated as candidates for election must have their place of work in the relevant constituency. A nomination must have two proposers both of whom must also be practising or non-practising members of the Law Society of Scotland.
Nominations must also be accompanied by a statement from the candidate that they consent to being nominated. No proposer may propose more candidates than there are constituency seats available.
Please send completed nomination form and candidate information to Amanda Byron, Governance Secretary at Law Society of Scotland: GovernanceTeam@lawscot.org.uk no later than 5pm on Monday, 16 February.
