The certificate on the Smartcard, the digital signature, has a validity period of three years. It needs to be renewed before its expiry date so that members can continue to take full advantage of all features of their Smartcard.
The signature cannot be renewed after the last day of its validity period - should the signature expire, a new certificate needs to be issued requiring a face-to-face meeting with a Smartcard Operator.
