Team building – for the Foundation?

You can achieve free team entry to some charity fundraising events, if your efforts go to supporting the Lawscot Foundation
17th June 2019 | Darren Kerr

Are you looking for any CSR activities to help your team building?

The Lawscot Foundation has a partnership with some fantastic events that you can take part in this year – and all entry fees are covered! All we ask in return for your free place is that you raise as much money as you can to help the Lawscot Foundation and help make someone's dream of becoming a lawyer a reality.

Some of the events you could get involved with over the next few months are the Kiltwalks in Dundee and Edinburgh, the Great Scottish Run and Walk in Edinburgh, and the Great Tattie Run in Perth. There's something for everyone and it's a great way to involve your colleagues and families, boost wellbeing and raise some money for a great cause.

The Lawscot Foundation aims to support academically talented students from less-advantaged backgrounds in Scotland through their legal education journey. While certainly not exclusive to the legal profession, social mobility is a challenge that everyone must help to tackle.

Since being set up in 2016, the Foundation has received nearly 140 eligible applications for financial support from aspiring Scottish solicitors. The young people who have applied have faced unimaginable challenges at such a young age – being in care; being a carer for their parents or siblings; being made homeless; poverty. Yet they've worked hard and achieved great exam results.

The Lawscot Foundation currently supports 17 students, of whom 47% are from the most deprived areas of Scotland and around a third act as young carers.

It's hugely frustrating to think that in 2019 an individual's future is not determined by talent and determination alone, yet this is often the case.

Even the most ambitious individuals can lose faith, and the challenges faced by Foundation-supported students can become compounded during university study: it can be incredibly difficult to balance studying, working, and competing for traineeship opportunities, while managing on a very limited budget.

This is why we're so keen to encourage our colleagues in the profession to support people starting out in their careers. Having a mentor or role model offering encouragement can make the difference between persevering and giving up.

It's thanks to you that we can help these talented students, and can continue to support even more inspirational students going forward.

Why not make this your most charitable year yet, and sign up to support the next generation of legal stars? Visit Lawscotfoundation.org.uk/events for more information.
